Frequently Asked Questions.
Q: How do I set up an appointment for a visit to the school?
A: You may visit our campus tour page and fill out an inquiry form to schedule a visit of our campus or you may contact us to set a time to tour the school. Our telephone number is (817) 448-8484.
Q: Can a student enroll during the school year?
A: Yes. Students may enroll at any time during the school year. Tuition is prorated for students enrolling during the year. More information can be found on our tuition page.
Q: Is medication necessary at the Anderson Private School for children with ADD or ADHD?
A: No. Highly capable children, by nature, learn differently than typically developing children their age. Many, if not most, gifted children can be diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. It is very typical of teachers without any experience or training in teaching gifted students to react negatively when children display “normal” gifted or creative behaviors. This may cause the teachers to recommend that the parents of the child take them to see a physician with the intention of placing them on a drug to “normalize” their behaviors. In reality, placing your children on any drug that is designed to curb their symptoms of ADD or ADHD, will have very negative effects on their physical and mental development and well being. The unintended side effects can last throughout adulthood. A simple google search will render thousands of websites that discuss this in detail. Someone from the Anderson School can also discuss this subject with you, if you would like to contact us. We strongly recommend that you contact your pediatrician and ask to have your child removed from chemical substances designed to alter behaviors. Changing the learning environment and the teaching methodology is much more effective and appropriate. Longitudinal studies have not been properly concluded to ascertain the negative results of long term exposure to these kind of drugs.
Q: What is the student-teacher ratio?
A: Most instruction is done one-on-one with the student. We have some small classes for different subjects and the ratio is approximately 5 to 1 overall.
Q: Does your school go on any field trips?
A: Yes. The entire school travels every Friday for an adventurous learning experience. We also take one week long trip each year, typically at the end of the second semester. You can see all the places we have been for many years and photographs of our journeys, by visiting our trip portfolio.
Q: What grade levels are offered?
A: The school is non-graded and accepts children ages four to sixteen. Children normally begin attending college as co-enrolled students around fifteen to sixteen years of age. Since our curriculum is non-traditional, students are in different levels in different subjects. It is not uncommon to have elementary age children studying high school subjects at our school.
Q: Do you offer any financial aid?
A: Yes. A few partial scholarships are available. Please visit our financial aid page for more information.
Q: What are your hours of operation?
A: School begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:15 p.m. The building is open at 8:00 a.m. for parents that need to drop off their children early. Students need to be picked-up from school no later than 3:30 p.m.
Q: Can prospective students spend a day at the school?
A: Yes. We welcome prospective students to spend the day with us. Fill out our inquiry form or call us at (817) 448-8484 to schedule a visit.
Q: What is the best way to contact someone with the school?
A: You can fill out an inquiry form and someone will contact you shortly from the school, or you can give us a call at (817) 448-8484 during school hours and someone will be happy to answer any questions you may have and schedule a visit of our campus.
Q: How many students attend The Anderson Private School?
A: We typically do not accept more than twenty five students per year. This ensures that our highly gifted student body receives the one-on-one education that is needed. Contact us for more information.
Q: Are students required to wear uniforms?
A: Yes. All students are required to wear uniforms. For more information on uniforms, see here.
Q: Is homework required for students?
A: Guided reading for one hour each night is required. This is the only homework requirement because gifted children do not thrive in a repetitious environment. It is also very beneficial to the child to spend the afternoons with their families, not completing school work that should have been finished in school.
Q: Does the Anderson Private School require any testing for new students?
A: No. The selection committee takes a close look at any and all available historical data such as report cards, resumes, vitas, awards, letters of recommendations and referrals. In addition, Dr. David Welsh, noted child psychologist, interviews both the parents and prospective student(s) to ascertain whether the non-traditional curriculums of the Anderson Private School will benefit the child(ren) and to see if there is an appropriate match between the school philosophy and parent/students expectations. If your child has ever been identified gifted, this documentation is weighed heavily.
